About the Journal

The Riara Law School is pleased to publish its inaugural edition of The Riara Law Journal focusing on the broad area of Law in a Society in Flux.
It is often observed that Kenyan society in line with that of other African countries is youthful. With this youth comes an associated dynamism. Society has evolved rapidly in the recent past both locally and globally. Norms have changed, the nature of commerce and education are changing and the law is called upon to respond evenly to these developments.
The surge of technological and other innovations in the last few decades, for example, has had major impacts on our society in an unprecedented manner. There are ongoing transformational shifts in education, health, media, business, agriculture and several other examples. In Africa, several startups have blossomed seeking to provide innovative solutions to match the needs of Africa’s people in diverse areas such as education, food production, transport, healthcare and mobile money. Governments have also taken up the use of technology and embraced e-government in service delivery through diverse platforms.
Higher education, including legal education is not immune from this influence. With
technological progress, demand is created for fresh competencies that set the stage for the next cycle of innovation and human excellence. Higher education is already experiencing a tectonic shift driven by the digital revolution such as the use of e-learning, deconstruction of the physical classroom into the virtual space, self-paced learning via education apps, MOOCs among others. As this continues, there will be a change in the learning content, as well as the modes of delivering learning in higher education to match the demands of the 21st Century work environment.
Within the Kenyan legal sector, the introduction of online incorporation of companies via the BRS platform on E-Citizen, the ongoing digitization of land transactions via the ardhi-sasa platform, and most notably the e-filing of pleadings and virtual courts initiated during the Covid-19 pandemic provide the clearest indicator to lawyers and legal educators that they must rapidly adapt to the changes precipitated by the technological revolution to remain relevant.
